Shooting Leads to Stand-Off and Suicide in Gatesville

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Shiloh Tanner says news travels fast in Gatesville.

"Everybody knows everybody," Tanner said. "...Friends started calling everybody. It just got around."

That's how he knew about the police stand-off that ended at Shortstop Discount Beverages on the corner of Highway 36 and Gateway Circle.

Gatesville Police Chief Nathan Gohlke says it didn't start there.

"This morning a little after nine o'clock, we had a shooting incident that occurred just west of Gatesville in the Arnett community," Gohlke said.

The Coryell County Sheriff's office received a call from Amber Suggs, saying she had been shot.

When police got to her home, Suggs told police the shooter was Franklin Wayne Ingram. She said he was driving a red Jeep Wrangler and may be headed to another house in Flat.

Police found Ingram coming into the area of Fort Gates from the south -- and followed him until he pulled in at Shortstop Discount Beverages.

"As police officers and deputies approached, a short stand-off ensued and the suspect ended up taking his own life," Gohlke said.

A dramatic scene that is rare in the Gatesville community, leaving residents surprised by what happened.

"It's a quiet town, no one bothers anybody," Tanner said. "So this is...a weird sight."

The motive for the shooting is still not clear, but the Texas Rangers and Gatesville Police Department will be helping Coryell County with the investigation.

There is no update yet on Amber Suggs' condition, but police say her injuries didn't seem to be life threatening.
