(KXAN) — A plane crashed near Pearland Regional Airport at approximately 9 a.m. while attempting to land.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot was the only person on board. The plane exploded and burned on impact and local officials are reporting  the pilot is dead.

The pilot tried to land once and was going around for a second attempt when he crashed. He was flying the twin-engine aircraft from Austin to Galveston Scholes Airport when he diverted to Pearland because of low visibility at Galveston. Signature Flight Services said they believe the plane didn't leave from their hanger, but that it left from Atlantic Aviation instead.

The plane was a Beechcraft King Air, is registered to TDC Aviation.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and will conduct an investigation.
