Man Arrested After Fighting With Cameron Officer

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A man is in jail Friday morning after he fought with a Cameron Police Officer.

At 1:15 a.m. on Friday, Officer Luis Alejo was investigating a suspicious person at the intersection of 8th and Martin Luther King Drive in Cameron.

When the officer went to investigate the man, he threw down an object onto the ground when he came in contact with the officer.

When Officer Alejo attempted to arrest the man, he claimed that he was a peace officer and was doing his job in the area. The man then began to fight with the officer and tried taking his weapon.

Police say that when the officer called for assistance from the public, no one stepped in to help the officer. Eventually, units from the Milam County Sheriff's Office and Cameron Police came to help the officer.

Thirty-seven-year-old Verdell R. Wells was arrested and booked in the Milam County Jail. He was charged for Resisting Arrest or Apprehension, Assaulting a Public Servant, Impersonating a Peace Officer, and Attempting to Take Weapon from a Peace Officer.

Officer Alejo has since been released from Scott and White, but will be required to have follow up medical treatment in the future.
