Fighting For A New Heart

Posted: Updated:

Laying down because he's exhausted, three year old Jesus Olivarez is fighting for his life tonight.

But he and his family plan to beat those odds.  Soon.  They found out on February 21st that he will be put on the list for a new heart. They'll be commuting to Childrens Hospital in Houston.

There's no doubt little Jesus has had a rough time.

Just after his birth, doctors discovered he was born with two holes in his heart. His arteries were backwards, so those had to be replaced.  Every time he went in for surgery, it seemed they found a new problem.

He's been through seven open heart surgeries. He has a pacemaker, and a G-button

A G-button is basically a feeding tube, because when he was 7 months old he forgot how to eat.

Now he's on ten medications a day and ready to get healthy again with a heart transplant.

Doctors want to act quickly because he eventually will go into heart failure.

Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough to maintain blood flow to meet the needs of the rest of the body

Jesus is great. He loves Yo Gabba Gabba. He loves to dance, sing, all the things a little boy loves.  This Saturday will be his fourth birthday, and a chance to raise money and support for their journey to get Jesus a new heart.

Because even though a new heart will physically keep Jesus well, the love between a mother and son will never change.

The event is Saturday from 6:30- 10:00 p.m. at the Overlook Pavilion Park, next to Dead Fish Grill in Belton.  All donations and money will go to help the family's medical bills, and help pay for hotel stays, gas, etc.
