The McLennan Highlanders fell to the Howard Hawks 98-91 this evening in the opening round of the Region V Tournament in Lubbock.
The two teams were evenly matched through the first 10 minutes of play. Howard held the 16-15 lead with 10:18 remaining in the first half. The Hawks used an 18-3 run in the next six minutes to break the game open. Howard extended the lead to 20 with just under a minute to go in the half and held the 44-26 advantage at the break.
Howard continued to dominate in the second half and led by 24, 80-56, with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Highlanders began to chip away at the lead down the stretch. McLennan cut the lead to six with 1:24 to play but ran out of time to complete the come back.
Freshman Austen Bradshaw led the Highlanders with 20 points and sophomore Deondre Ray added 17. Sophomore Wayne Langston scored 13. Sophomores Shawn Prudhomme and Tevin Hanner added 12 points each.
