Baylor WBB's odyssey Sims and Nina Davis Earn Big 12’s Top Postseason Honors

IRVING, Texas – Baylor's duo of Odyssey Sims and Nina Davis received numerous 2013-14 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Awards the league office announced today. The honors were voted on by the league's head coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own players. West Virginia's Mike Cary was the league's pick for Coach of the Year and WVU senior guard Taylor Palmer was selected for the Sixth Man Award.

           Sims, a 5-8 native of Irving, Texas, was named the league's Player of the Year and also received Defensive Player of the Year honors while Davis was honored as Freshman of the Year.

Sims and Davis were also named to the All-Big 12 first team while sophomore guard Niya Johnson and senior guard Makenzie Robertson were All-Big 12 honorable mentions. Sims was a unanimous All-Big 12 selection; it marked her fourth consecutive first-team recognition.

Davis, a 5-11 forward from Memphis, Tenn., was also named to the league's All-Freshman team.

Sims, a senior guard, became the third Lady Bear to receive Player of the Year kudos and it marked the fourth straight year a Baylor player won the award. Sophia Young was a 2006 recipient while Brittney Griner won the award in 2011, '12 and '13.

With Davis' selection, it marked the third time in the last five years a Baylor player received Freshman of the Year honors. Griner was a 2010 recipient while Sims won the award in 2011.

Sims leads the nation in scoring with 29.6 points and has registered four 40-point outings. She is also averaging 4.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.0 steals. Sims is currently fifth in the Big 12 in career points with 2,366 and 10th in career assists with 612. She has connected on .453 percent of her field goal attempts this season, including .421 from beyond the arc. Sims has been named Big 12 Player of the Week seven times as a senior.

Davis is the Big 12's top rebounder with 9.0 per game and most accurate shooter with a .596 field goal percentage. She is second on the Lady Bears and ninth in the Conference in scoring with 14.3 points and has 10 double-doubles, good for second in the league. She has started 25 of 30 games in her rookie season and earned seven Big 12 Freshman of the Week awards.

Baylor, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship's top-seed, will begin tournament play on Saturday, March 8, when it takes on the winner of the Kansas/Kansas State contest. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Network and will tip at 1:30 p.m. (CT). All games will be played in Oklahoma City's Chesapeake Energy Arena.
