The McLennan Highlassies defeated the Weatherford Lady Coyotes 113-108
this evening to secure their spot in the Region V Championship game tomorrow evening.
The two teams kept the game tight through the first 15 minutes of play. McLennan held the 30-27 advantage with 6:07 to play in the first half. The Highlassies' Shanice Davis scored seven points in the next minute and a half to extend the McLennan lead to 10. Ashley Bean scored the next 11 points for the Highlassies and the defense held Weatherford to five points over a two minute period to extend the lead to 16. Davis then drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give McLennan the 63-44 advantage at the break.
Weatherford came out shooting in the second half, cutting the lead to eight with 14:22 remaining in the game. The Highlassies pulled away again, extending the lead to 17 midway through the half, 89-72. The Lady Coyotes rallied, tying the game at 93 with four minutes to play. McLennan took the lead on a pair of Bean free throws with 3:44 seconds to go and never relinquished it, leading by as may as seven in the final minutes.
The Highlassies will face either New Mexico or Collin in the championship game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. with a trip to the national tournament in Salina, Kan. on the line.
