Baylor’s Chery Honored as Big 12 Player of the Week

Posted: Updated:

IRVING, Texas – Baylor junior point guard Kenny Chery has been voted the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Sunday by the league office.

Chery's award marks the fourth time this season the Bears have had a player of the week, tying the program record set in 2008. Cory Jefferson was honored on Dec. 12 and again on Feb. 24, and Isaiah Austin was recognized on Feb. 17. It's the first time Chery has earned the conference's Player of the Week award, but he's previously was named Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 9 and Feb. 17.

Chery averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in guiding Baylor to a home win vs. No. 16 Iowa State and a win at Kansas State. The Bears are now 7-1 since Chery's return to the starting lineup following a turf toe injury, rallying back from a 2-8 hole in Big 12 Conference play to finish at 9-9 for the season.

Chery had a career-high 29 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in the win at Kansas State, which made the Bears the only Big 12 team to win in Manhattan this season. He sank 13 of 14 free throws, including all 10 attempts in the final three minutes of the game.

The Montreal, Quebec, native also had 16 points, 6 assists and just 1 turnover in 34 minutes of Baylor's win against Iowa State. He shot a combined .536 from the field during the two games, connecting on 15 of 28 field goal attempts, and he went 15-of-16 at the free throw line.

Baylor next takes on TCU at 8:30 p.m. CT Wednesday in first round action at the 2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Championship. The game will be televised on Big 12 Network, and the winner will face No. 2 seed Oklahoma in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
