Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader with Trinity University 9-1, 4-2 Tuesday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improved to 16-12 on the season as the Tigers dropped to 13-14.
Leah Brown got the Cru on the board first in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single, scoring Leanne Hinojosa from third base. Dayton Kunz followed that with a two-RBI triple and Kourtney Bevers added the Cru's final run of the inning with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead after three. Trinity's Caitlynn Dykes added a run for the Tigers off an RBI double from Brittany Haby in the top of the fourth to cut UMHB's lead to three. Kunz hit her second RBI of the day with a bases-clearing double for a 6-1 Cru advantage. Hannah Parker added a sacrifice fly and Janie Neyland hit an RBI single for an 8-1 lead before Leah Brown solidified the win with an RBI single. Brown and Bevers led the Cru with three hits while Kunz had a game-high four RBI. UMHB totaled nine runs on 14 hits with no errors while the Tigers had one run on five hits with no errors. Rebekah Ragsdale earned the win in the circle, allowing just five hits in four innings pitched.
Trinity grabbed an early lead in the second game with a one-run fourth inning. Myranda Hinojosa evened it up in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI, scoring Dayton Kunz from third. Trinity's Hillary Hoffman used an RBI single in the top of the fifth to regain the one-run Tiger lead. Trinity held that lead until the bottom of the sixth when Leah Brown hit a bases-clearing double, batting in three RBI for a 4-2 UMHB lead. The Tigers were unable to respond in the top of the seventh, giving UMHB the two-game sweep. Myranda Hinojosa led the Cru with three hits while Brown added three RBI. UMHB totaled four runs on nine hits with three errors. The Tigers recorded two runs on six hits with one error. Haley Parker earned the win in the circle for UMHB while Kaci Wellik took the loss for the Tigers.
UMHB returns to action with a weekend-series at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark. The Cru begins the series with a 3 p.m. match against the Eagles on Friday, April 4th at 3 p.m.
