2014 Southwestern Women's West Region Invitational

Georgetown, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's golf team fought off windy conditions and then held off the rest of the field as the Cru women rolled to the team title at the West Region Invitational Tuesday in Georgetown. The Cru women fired a 301-329=630 team total to top U.T.-Tyler's second-place total of 320-323=643 by 13 strokes. Tournament host Southwestern University finished third with a 318-348=666, Schreiner University was fourth after recording a 332-347=679 and Trinity University rounded out the top five at 342-361=703. Concordia Texas claimed sixth place with a 354-364=718 team total, Hardin-Simmons University was seventh with a 354-365=719 and Texas Lutheran University posted a 382-374=756 for eighth place. Tuesday's final round was played in winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour.

UMHB's Victoria Thane won the individual title after shooting a 75-82=157. She edged teammate Taylor O'Rear (79-79) and Southwestern's Ali Walden (77-81) by one stroke as those two players tied for second place with 158's. The Cru's Elizabeth Davis (72-87) and McKenzie Ralston (75-84) tied for fourth place with 159 totals. Kelly Gonyea shot 86-84=170 for UMHB to tie for 16th place, Allison Holly tied for 20th place with an 82-90=172, Sara Eckert (87-86) and Kaley Jackson (84-89) both posted 173's to tie for 24th place and Ashley Garbade tied for 28th place after shooting an 86-89=175.

The two-day, 36-hole event was played on a par-72, 5,808-yard layout at Berry Creek Golf Course in Georgetown. The Cru women will return to action with the American Southwest Conference Tournament next Monday and Tuesday. That tournament will be played at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose and the ASC champion clinches an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The UMHB women are defending NCAA Division III National Champions and have won three straight conference titles.
