Boots Needed to Honor Fallen Heroes

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Fort Hood's Fisher House is collecting combat boots for an upcoming run to honor fallen troops, wounded warriors, suicide victims, and their families.
By November, 3, 500 pairs are needed to line the route of the Hero and Remembrance Run Walk and Roll, which will also connect Military families with the resources Fisher House has to offer .
The used soles have a very special meaning to the family of  Specialist Kevin James Graham. The used soles have a very special meaning to the family of  Specialist Kevin James Graham.

He gave his life for his country in Afghanistan on September 26, 2009, but before he deployed, he left his 11-year old son Brian with some big boots to fill.
"When my step dad left, he told me to be man of the house, and so that's what I did," says Brian.
Soon Specialist Graham and thousands more like him, will be honored through the display of 7,000 combat boots, representing the empty shoes of post-9/11 heroes, like him.
"To see a volume like 3,000 boots in one place to represent all of the people who gave the ultimate sacrifice, I think to see the big picture is an important thing," says Christine Hood as she drops off several pairs at The Outpost Texas in Copperas Cove.
They were donated by soldiers in her husband's unit as they loaded up on a bus and left for Afghanistan on Sunday.
"I think that especially with the timing, with my husband deploying, it's especially close to my heart," Christine says.
Those making contributions are welcome to include photos of their loved ones and write messages on the boots about where they've been.
"It's personal, you know, it could be me, it could have been my husband, it could have been my son," says Theresa Johnson, Incoming Manager for Fort Hood Fisher House.
When the boots are finished, they'll be placed every couple feet or so along the route of the run.
Then for a week, they'll be set up for all, including family members, like Brian, to see.
"For them to come and see that love, they can do little mementos and stuff, so it's pretty cool," says Theresa.
Drop off locations are The Outpost Texas in Copperas Cove, Old Navy in Harker Heights, The Fort Hood Fisher House, and Green Beans Coffee locations on and around Fort Hood.
You're asked to put an empty water bottle inside of the boots.

Volunteers to collect and prepare boots are needed.
