Local Bikers Raise Awareness For Motorcycle Safety

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- "A car had turned in front of us and we collided," Amy Miller said.

It's been six years since she was involved in a motorcycle accident that changed her life forever.

"Right after that, another car came and ran me over and fled the scene."

She spent four months in the hospital recovering from a Traumatic Brain Injury.

On Sunday morning, she got back on a motorcycle for the first time since that night, joining other bikers for the third annual Do You See Me Now? event.

"Any little bit of help we can do to maybe eliminate, even if it's just one accident...it's worth it," said biker Kevin Clay.

The bikers aren't just raising awareness, they're raising money for road signs that would remind drivers to keep an eye out for motorcycles.

Cities like Harker Heights and Nolanville have already agreed, they just have to find a place for the signs.

"There are a lot of bikes out there and every year they multiply," said Nestor Sanchez. "So we need to let the community know that they need to share the road with us."

Bikers say distracted drivers are the biggest threat to their safety, especially in Texas where it is legal to text while you're on the road.

"They're driving down the road and start texting or make a phone call," said program founder Terri "Popsicle" Benezet. "That two seconds or two minutes takes your eyes off the road."

A few seconds or minutes that can take a life. A reality that makes Amy Miller grateful to be alive.

"This has been a long road, but it's not gonna keep me down," Miller said.

The awareness group says while their focus is motorcycle safety, the program is for everyone. They also educate students in school about the importance of keeping your eyes on the road.
