UPDATE: Fires in Fort Hood Training Area 90 Percent Contained

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE: April 30, 2014, 12:00 p.m. -- Fort Hood officials said Wednesday morning that 90 percent of the fires within the Fort Hood training area is contained.

Fort Hood Fire Chief Billy Rhoads said Wednesday morning that the Fort Hood range fire at Blackwell Multi-use Range is 90 percent contained with nearly 600 acres burned, and the fire on Lone Star Range is also 90 percent contained with nearly 500 acres burned.

Officials say that the two fires continue to pose no danger to any homes, structures or infrastructures.

No one has been injured from the fires.

Officials said Wednesday that the fire crews are continuing to cut fire breaks around the fire to minimize the fires' ability to spread.

UPDATE: April 29, 2014, 12:00 p.m. -- Officials said Tuesday afternoon that the fire on Fort Hood is only 30% contained.

While they are hoping to get at least half of it contained by early afternoon, Fort Hood officials believe that it will be 70% contained by Tuesday night.

Officials also noted that there are actually two fires burning.

Because of the strong winds, helicopters are not able to be used to help extinguish the fires.

(KCEN) -- Fire crews continue to work on containing a 500 acre brush fire on Fort Hood that started around 1:30 p.m.

Fort Hood officials have reported four fires on post, including fires on the Sugarloaf multi-use range and the Blackwell multi-use range. These fires were caused by training exercises. No structures are being threatened at this time.

The Bell County West Strike Team is waiting to assist but isn't needed at the time.  Air assets and ground support vehicles are on standby while officials survey the scene. Crews will fight the flames where they can, however it's difficult in certain areas because there are duds on the ranges that could potentially explode if they get too hot. They'll let the fire burn itself out in those areas.

According to Temple Fire Department Capt. Ron Stewart, the Temple Fire Department has received numerous phone calls about smoke and ash in the Temple area. Stewart says if the smoke is filtering into homes, residents should put their A/C's on  recirculation mode.

Stewart says the smoke and ash isn't harmful, but may cause some irritation. He encourages anyone who lives in areas seeing thick smoke coverage to stay indoors.

(KCEN) -- A large fire has been reported on a Fort Hood shooting range. Viewers have been sending several photos of large plumes of smoke seen from Killeen, Harker Heights and other areas close to post.

Further information isn't available at this time but a KCEN News crew is headed to the scene.

We'll keep you updated on this page as we get more reports.
