Gas Leak Blocks Off Road For 4 Hours

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) --  A natural gas leak caused by construction shut down traffic on Stan Schlueter Loop in Killeen for four hours Wednesday.

A crew digging a hole near the intersection at Kaulean Rd . struck an Atmos Energy line around noon.

Police had the loop barricaded off from Trimmier Rd. to Fort Hood Street.

"Over the past hour and a half, the odor has gotten very strong, and traffic obviously has picked up through here," Adam Coday tells KCEN around 1:30 p.m.

He was outside working in a neighborhood right across the street from the incident when it happened.

While Killeen Police were directing traffic away from the area, David Hosick was on his way to his home in that same neighborhood.

"I was driving down the road, and I smelled it, and that's when they ended up blocking up the road over there."

While Atmos Energy workers repaired the line, local firefighters were out making sure nothing ignited the gas.

Carroll Smith with the Killeen Police Department says, "Avoid lighting any lighters or any sparks or anything like that. That's why we're keeping people at bay, because we don't want anything to trigger it."

That's exactly what Coday was worried about.

"I hope there's no open flames. It's very strong, it just overcame everybody," he says.

Now he can breathe a less polluted sigh of relief.

The line was patched around 4 o'clock, and Stan Schlueter Loop was reopened just in time for 5 o'clock traffic.

Killeen's deputy fire chief says the windy afternoon actually helped prevent even more danger.

It caused the gas to spread out, rather than pooling in one place.
