Americans Will Spend $20 Billion on Mother's Day

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Mother's Day is right around the corner, and as the day gets closer local flower shops, restaurants and shops will be packed with families searching for that special gift.

According to the National Retail Federation Americans will shell out $20 billion this year on their well deserving mothers. Of that $2.3 billion will be spent on flowers with two thirds of shoppers buying bouquets.

"Mother's Day is like controlled chaos for us," Marvels Florist owner Phillip Enderle said. "I would say we are about five to six times busier than a normal day."

About 80% of shoppers will pick out cards, and $3.6 billion will be spent on outings like brunch or a nice dinner. Local shops are also big winners on Mother's Day, showcasing their unique and personalized gifts for customers.

"If there's a certain saying, or a nickname for your mother we can put those on shirts," BJ Callaway said. She owns a corner boutique in Copperas Cove called Gift Expressions, and carry several one of a kind gifts like handmade jewelry, personalized "Army Mom" purses, and candles.

But when all is said and done, regardless of what you spend on your mother next Sunday, many will agree - it's the thought that counts, and you can't put a price tag on a mother's love.
