Cameron Park Zoo Hosts Baby Shower For Pregnant Orangutan

Posted: Updated:
There's a baby on board at Cameron Park Zoo in Waco. Mei is a pregnant Orangutan that is due any day and on Sunday, zookeepers hosted a baby shower to celebrate.

Visitors joined in the festivities for cake and decorations and even brought gifts for the mom-to-be.

This is Mei's first baby, but zookeepers have been training her for motherhood for over eight months.

Curator of Programs and Exhibits Terri Cox says Mei is ready for the baby to come.
"She's pretty big right now, so she spends most of her time napping in the yard," Cox said.

She's due May 22nd, but they think she'll give birth sooner, so Sunday was her last time on exhibit.

"There will be a 24/7 watch waiting for the baby," Cox said. "We will be there if she needs any assistance."

While she'll have plenty of privacy during the birth, zookeepers will be secretly watching on camera.

Orangutans are endangered in the wild and females can only have a baby every eight years, so they're being extra cautious to make sure everything goes well.

"We're all on call," Zookeeper Emily Gertiser said. "We all have our phone numbers written down to run here at any time."

They don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet because of limited access during the ultrasounds, but zookeepers are coming up with name options and the public will vote to decide.
