FDA issues warning about aspirin

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) --  It's common to take aspirin to help prevent a heart attack or stroke.

But the Food and Drug Administration is reminding everyone that aspirin therapy is not for everyone.

This all stems from a request from the makers of Bayer aspirin

They asked the FDA for clearance to say aspirin can be used to prevent a first heart attack or stroke, but the FDA said no.

Instead, they issued a "consumer update" reaffirming what many cardiologists already say: aspirin should only be used in high-risk patients or secondary heart attack prevention.

Aspirin is a blood thinner and can lead to dangerous bleeding in the stomach or brain.
