Officials Promote Summer Lake Safety

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- The summer recreational season is kicking off across Central Texas.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local law enforcement agencies held a press conference at Temple Lake Park in an effort to promote lake safety.

Belton Lake hit a record low of more than 13 feet below conservation last year. The lake is already at 10 feet below normal this year, and with a lack of substantial rainfall, officials predict conditions could worsen.

As a result, they encourage boaters and lake-goers to use common sense and to stay within the channels.

"The channels are usually always deeper, they don't have near the population of stumps and other obstacles, but make sure they stay in those areas and be watching out for those type of things,” said Ronnie Bruggman, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake supervisor for Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

More than 2 million visitors are expected at area lakes this year and about three-quarters of them will fall between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.
