Temple HS Remembers Student Who Drowned In Lake Belton

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Temple High School students returned to class Monday after one of their own tragically drowned while swimming in Lake Belton on Saturday.

17-year old Kentrell Chandler was number 51 on the school's junior varsity football team with plans to wear that same jersey when he would join the varsity team in 2015.

Friends and teammates tell KCEN that Kentrell was liked by everyone and had a special gift to lift others up with his easygoing humor.

His coach calls the team a big family and says Kentrell will be sorely missed.

Coach Mike Spradlin says he remembers Kentrell always being quiet and polite, especially when speaking to adults.

Spradlin went on to say, "Honestly, it's like losing a family member, we certainly are a tight knit group, and he was part of that tight knit group."

He says the team's suffering is nothing compared to what Kentrell's family at home is going through and that the most important thing for the team now is supporting them.

The Quarterback Club will collect donations to help with funeral expenses at the upcoming Spring Game.

Next year's sports uniforms will also include special patches to honor both Kentrell and another fellow classmate killed in a car accident just two weeks ago.

Funeral arrangements for Kentrell are pending.
