Fort Worth Postal Worker Accused of Killing Family Dog

(CNN) -- A Fort Worth family says a mail carrier killed their small dog.

The reason: The mailman thought the terrier threatened his life.

The family says the postal worker hit the 10-pound terrier over the head with a rock.

Maxwell was four-years-old, a little Silky Terrier with a playful attitude and a loving family.

A spot of blood shows where he was slammed over the head with a rock.

"For almost five years, he's seen my dog every day and he knows that that's our dog." Taiesha Brown was in her east Fort Worth home on Saturday afternoon.

Her husband came running in, after noticing Maxwell had gotten out of their yard.

They soon found the little guy across the street, with a mailman nearby.

"And his words were, I know you're mad at me, but I had to do what I had to do," Brown recalls. "Ten pounds, small dog, very non-aggressive."

The dog was rushed to the vet, but the damage was done. Maxwell was put down.

"He damaged the spinal cord, he damaged his nerves," said Brown.

The U.S. Postal Service told a station in a statement, "We are saddened at the loss of the customer's pet. Local postal officials are conducting a thorough investigation, we understand that in this instance, the letter carrier was defending himself."

Ricardo Arzua was in his driveway straight across from where the incident happened. He says the dog wasn't a threat on Saturday or any day before.

"It was a good puppy," Arzua said.

Fort Worth police are now investigating.

While the Brown's are left wondering how the dog they raised from just a pup at age 14 weeks, is now gone.
