Local Army Wife Makes Birthdays and Celebrations Possible

Posted: Updated:
FT. HOOD - (KCEN) – Balloons, streamers, birthday hats, candles… throwing your children’s birthday parties can get expensive. Sometimes, the money just is not in the budget. Marcela Robles has been there.

“I know how it can feel to ask for help,” Marcela said. “I’ve experienced it myself when we had our first son. We had to sell things to be able to make money to have his birthday party or just say we couldn’t have one this time.”

But Marcela doesn’t want any parent to go through that feeling. So while her husband is deployed in Afghanistan, the busy mother of two added even more to her plate. She created the group called Wish Upon a Birthday to help out military and veteran families needing that extra help.

“There are many people in this community that are barely making it,” she said. “Sometimes they can’t have a birthday party. Why sacrifice a birthday when they have so much to sacrifice already.”

She started the group with a simple Facebook page, and in just two weeks she’s already helped ten families with baby shower and birthday decorations and supplies.

“Just the surprise and their happy faces, that fulfills me alone. I’m happy with that,” she said.

So far Marcela has bought and gathered all the supplies herself, but she’s working to make her group a non-profit. And limited on how much she can purchase herself, Marcela is reaching out to local party stores and others who are willing to donate supplies … even if it’s just a package of streamers or balloons.

“I would be grateful, so grateful,” she said.

Her one wish – is that every parent can give their child an unforgettable birthday. To find out more on Wish Upon a Birthday (click here).
