Baylor to clash with Kentucky in another Elimination Game

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – After a devastating 11-0 loss to Florida Thursday, Baylor rebounded with a convincing 7-2 win over Florida State Saturday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium to avoid elimination. Now, the No. 13 seeded Lady Bears (48-15) will take on No. 14 seed Kentucky (50-19) at 6 p.m. on ESPN in an elimination game with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.

With just four hours between the end of Baylor’s win over FSU and the start of the Kentucky game, Baylor will send Whitney Canion to the circle after she picked up a 2.1-inning save to close the FSU win.

Canion struggled in game one of the WCWS in the loss to Florida after pitching every postseason inning for Baylor until she was lifted in the fourth inning. Thursday, Canion’s velocity was clocked in the low 60’s, which is lower than the 67-69 MPH range she’s stayed in for the majority of the 2014 season. In her save effort vs. FSU Saturday, again Canion was reaching the upper 60’s.

Kentucky began the WCWS with a 4-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette Thursday, but fell to No. 2 seed Alabama Friday night, 2-0. The Wildcats could pitch Kelsey Nunley, who’s thrown all 14 innings of the WCWS for Kentucky thus far, and surrendered just three runs. Nunley is 30-10 on the season while Canion is 31-11.

Baylor is hitting .303 as a team with 73 home runs on the year while Kentucky hits .262 with 68 home runs.

The winner will go on to face Florida at Noon Sunday when just four teams remain.

Beth Mowins and Jessica Mendoza will have the call on ESPN at 6 p.m. and Derek Smith and John Morris will call it on the radio for Baylor fans on 1660 AM ESPN Central Texas and on BaylorBears.com.
