Little River-Academy VFD Outfits New Brush Truck in Time for Fire Season

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- It's been in the works for months, and now a local volunteer fire department is ready to use a new brush fire truck.

The 5-ton truck comes to the Little River-Academy VFD from the U.S. Forestry Service. In order to keep it, they had to have it painted and rigged with lights, a siren, and firefighting equipment.

That work comes at a cost of about $2,000, a hefty price tag for a volunteer department.

But the extra 1,200 gallons of water it brings to the table are a big help as fire season heats up.

"It started out as a pain in my side, I'm telling you right now, 'cause it [was] just one thing after another," said LRA VFD Capt. Jimmy Snowden. "And then finally we got it lined out now and it's ready to go."

"It's going to be a big help, big help water-wise," added deputy chief Josh Peters, "especially out in these rural areas where you know you see a hydrant every four miles."

The department's other trucks have a capacity of only about 400 to 500 gallons each. The big increase in water storage will also be helpful for mutual aid calls throughout Bell County.
