Killeen Students Receive College Scholarships

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- The Killeen Police Department presented six scholarships to local students on Thursday morning and the wife of fallen officer Bobby Hornsby presented three more in his memory.

The students are young, smart and looking forward to the future, but now pursuing their goals will be easier. Six of them received $1,000 scholarships provided by the Killeen Police Department L.E.A.F. program, also known as Law Enforcement Assistance Fund. The program has awarded scholarships to 21 kids of police department employees over the last four years. "Today we have given almost $300,000 to people in the department and their families," said Carroll Smith of KPD.

The money typically goes to families in the midst of hardships that Kimberly Hornsby knows all too well after losing her husband, Bobby in the line of duty almost a year ago. "Education was important to me...and so he supported that," Hornsby said. On Thursday, she gave three students $2,000 scholarships to college in his honor and she says it won't be the last time. Recipients each wrote an essay about what it means to be a hero, a special subject because she married one. "Bobby was always supporting the community, so I'm really excited that I can continue to give back in his name," Hornsby said.
