Temple Man Runs for City Council with Criminal Record

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- Running for office with a criminal record? It's happening right here in Central Texas. A local man is fighting for the district two seat on the Temple City Council, despite his not-so-clean past.

Gregory Alan Wise, also known as "Red," served in the United States Army for three years, so he says honesty is the best policy. He has no problem admitting to the 14 misdemeanors on his record.
"...All this stuff did happen, I won't deny," Wise said. The majority of the charges are for criminal trespassing, but several others make the list: possession of marijuana, assault, terroristic threats against a family or household member and unlicensed carrying of a weapon. Wise says it could be worse. "You don't see any burglaries, robberies, home invasions on there."

Wise has been convicted of the fourteen misdemeanors in fourteen years, but city secretary Lacy Borgeson says it doesn't disqualify him. "We follow the election code," Borgeson said. "It's chapter 141 which talks about you must have been finally convicted of a felony." No felony, no problem, according to the state and the city of Temple puts emphasis on another kind of eligibility. "As far as our charter goes, we only have residential requirements," Borgeson said.
You must live in the city for no less than a year and in the specific district for no less than six months, which makes Wise completely eligible for that seat on the city council. Voting will take place on July 19, 2014.
