(NBC NEWS) -- A severe storm system created multiple tornadoes in northeast Nebraska Monday, including simultaneous tornadoes dropping out of a pitch-black sky.

Health care officials reported dozens were injured in the wild weather, including 16 critically wounded patients at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska. One person was reported dead.

Two people from Pilger, Nebraska, who suffered lacerations were expected to arrive at Providence Medical Center in the city of Wayne.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado had hit the Omaha/Valley region of the state.

The system was also headed for the small Nebraska towns of Pender and Thurston, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore.

City officials in Wisner, Nebraska, said they saw a couple of funnels to the southwest, but they believe the tornadoes stayed west of Wisner and hit the towns of Pilger and Stanton instead. Another tornado touched down in Beemer, Nebraska.

Pilger was directly hit by the twin tornadoes. Photos from the scene showed the large extent of the damage, including scattered debris, uprooted trees and damaged homes.

Cities in Iowa — such as Sioux City and Sergeant Bluff — and South Sioux City, Nebraska, were also under tornado warnings until 5:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. ET), according to The Weather Channel.

Golf ball-sized hail was reported on the north side of Estherville, Iowa, according to the National Weather Service.

(KCEN) – While the homeless veteran count is dropping nationwide, Killeen and Temple are seeing a spike in the number of homeless veterans – and it's not just individual veterans. “We're seeing more homeless families, and we've seen an increase in that over the last few months because of the downsizing of the military,” Paula Wood said. “It's very sad to look a family in the eye and say do you have a friend or family member you can stay with because it's going to take a month to get you re-ho...More >>

(NBC) -- A federal judge Friday threw out new Texas abortion restrictions that would have effectively closed more than a dozen clinics in the state. U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel sided with clinics that sued over one of the most disputed measures of a sweeping anti-abortion bill signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry in 2013. The ruling stops new restrictions that would have left just seven abortion facilities open in Texas by Sept. 1; there are currently 19 providers in Texas, according to th...More >>
