Milam County Commissioner Resigns After Texas Rangers Investigation

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) – Milam County Commissioner Chuck “Tank” Balch is resigning after being investigated by the Texas Rangers.

According to the Milam County District Attorney’s Office Balch was being investigated for authorizing the use of Milam County personnel and equipment to help a local church in Marak called St. Cyril and Methodism Church.

The DA’s office says Balch fully cooperated with the Texas Rangers’ investigation, accepted responsibility and has made restitution to the county.

County Judge David Barkemeyer told KCEN Balch didn't know he was breaking the law at the time, but his actions were a clear violation of the law. He says several weeks ago Balch was helping the church with a building's foundation and sent a county employee with a roller to help with the construction issue. Someone then reported his actions to the Sheriff's Department, who then handed over the investigation into the Texas Rangers.

“You know, ignorance is no excuse. The DA’s office and Sheriff’s Department have to do what they have to do. There is no question the law was violated,” Barkemeyer said. “It’s unfortunate. I wish something could have been worked out where Mr. Balch would not have been asked to resign. He has done an outstanding job the short time he’s been commissioner.”

Barkemeyer says the DA's office will not pursue any other action because Balch agreed to resign and pay $5,000 to the county for restitution.

Barkemeyer says he will accept Balch's resignation on June 30th. At that time Barkemeyer says he will appoint someone to fill the precinct one vacancy. He says he already has someone lined up, and will announce who the person is at the right time.

We have tried to call Balch, but so far we have not been able to reach him for a response.
