Storms Bring Mosquitoes , But Lower Risk Of West Nile

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- It's a familiar feeling for Texans and a sure sign of summer. Itchy mosquito bites. "I think the rain has definitely made it worse," Audrey Cortes said. "We pretty much can't go outside without getting one on us."

Richard Duhrkopf, Associate Professor of Biology at Baylor University says she's right, all of the recent storms are to blame. "They're leaving a lot of standing water and we're gonna see a lot of mosquitoes," Duhrkopf said.

More mosquitoes, more bites, but it's not all bad news. Duhrkopf says mosquitoes that carry disease, particularly West Nile Virus, breed in foul and polluted water. This kind of water typically gets washed away by heavy rain, putting everyone at lower risk for the deadly disease.

Kelly Craine of the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District says you can never be too careful. "We're always reminding people that it is important you make sure your backyard...your garden isn't the perfect habitat for mosquitoes," Craine said. That means dumping out all standing water. Bird baths, buckets or even a small dish holding a plant. "All they need is a teaspoon of standing water to lay their eggs so that can be anywhere," Craine said.
Experts say mosquito problems will go away in July if the weather gets dry and hot like it usually does in late summer.
