Brazos River Bridges Completed

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- The drive through Waco will now look different if you're traveling along I-35. After two years of construction, the Brazos River bridges are complete, right on time for the August opening of McLane Stadium.

The $5 billion project was approved by tax payers back in 2009. Engineers say the bridge is the first of its kind in Texas and possibly the entire country because of the unique design and steel material.

TxDOT bridge division director Gregg Freeby says it's a signature structure without an enormous cost. "It provides a gateway," Freeby said. "Most signature bridges are very expensive, this was a very economical design."

The bridges will ease traffic, especially for 18-wheelers that account for about 40 percent of the vehicles moving through that part of I-35. They also added pathways for pedestrians and bicyclists to help enhance the growing downtown area. There are plans to add accent lighting in the coming months.
