Davis Visits Waco, Attacks Abbott’s Hazardous Chemical Ruling

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN)— Over 100 people packed the McLennan County Democratic headquarters Tuesday to get a glimpse and listen to State Senator Wendy Davis.

The Fort Worth Democrat running for governor spent the majority of her speech attacking her Republican challenger, Attorney General Greg Abbott. Mainly his decision in May, preventing state agencies from revealing publicly where large amounts of hazardous chemicals are being stored.

“The Texas standard cannot be to accept money from the insiders who want to keep these facilities under wraps,” said Davis. “Then send folks driving around from door to door asking blindly about dangerous chemicals.”

Chemicals like ammonium nitrate that was stored at the West Fertilizer Plant.

Abbott argues his decision is simply upholding the 2003 Texas Homeland Security Act, which prevents releasing information that could be a threat to homeland security.

A decision Davis says is actually putting more Texans at risk.

“The more important issue here is that families understand the proximity of these dangerous chemicals to their everyday lives,” said Davis. “Whether it’s where they live, where their kids go to school or where they work.”

Davis added that if elected, she will designate making Tier II chemical information available to the public an emergency item. That allows the legislature to discuss the issue in the first 60 days of the next session.
