Coalition Fights Demolition Of Old West High School Building

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Members of the Save 1923 WHS Building coalition went before the West ISD school board Thursday night and demanded trustees to reconsider plans to tear down the old high school. For those who attended classes in the district’s first high school, built in 1923, it's a place they've grown to love and cherish.

Engineers initially deemed the building structurally sound following the April 17, 2013 fertilizer plant explosion. West ISD has since tried to figure out what to do with it. That's until last month when the school board announced plans to demolish the building due to the cost of renovations. Executive Coalition Member Joe Mashek said the announcement immediately ignited opposition.

"Right now, what we want to do is keep the building, get it secured, cover the windows until they put the new glass in, and let us go forward with getting it registered with the Texas Historical Commission,” said Mashek.

"Turn it into a museum, turn it into a meeting rooms, or offices or whatever is needed, but please secure this building and make it last,” said Asa Gamble, a coalition member.

The coalition is also asking the school board to have a local certified architectural structural engineer inspect the condition of the building at their cost.

In the meantime, an open forum meeting has been tentatively planned for August 7. Nearly 600 people have already signed a petition to save the building.

(CNN) -- It may be possible to rewire your brain so that it wants -- craves, even -- healthier foods. How? By following a healthy diet. We know, that wasn't the quick fix to afternoon ice cream binges you were hoping for. But this research could lead to a more sci-fi solution to the obesity epidemic. In a pilot study published Monday in the journal Nutrition Diabetes, scientists say that changing your eating behavior can actually change how your brain reacts to high-calorie and low-calori...More >>
