Immigrants Held at Jack Harwell Detention Center

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- Activists and demonstrators from across Texas gathered in Waco today to protest immigrants being held in a local detention center.

The demonstration started Saturday morning on South University Parks Dr.

People from Austin, Dallas and Waco held up signs and demanded better conditions for the 250 immigrants held at the Jack Harwell Detention Center.

"Our brothers and sisters who are institutionalized, who are jailed," said one protestor. "And who are marginalized because of where they were born and how they got here." The group then headed to the detention center to deliver Spanish-language legal materials to the warden.

Activists says the 250 men being held at the detention center are from El Salvador and are waiting to be deported.

Along with access to Spanish-language legal materials, the protestors want the immigrants to have more access to medical care and don't believe they should be housed in a criminal detention center.
