Archie's Archie Andrews will die taking a bullet for his gay friend

By Tim Surette,

Archie Andrews, the freckled redhead who has been a staple of comic books since 1941, is dying. But it's how he's going to bite it that will really resonate.

In Wednesday's issue of Life with Archie, Archie will be fatally shot taking a bullet intended for his gay friend Kevin Keller during an assassination attempt, The Associated Press reports. The identity of the assailant is being kept secret, however.

Worst ways to go: The most outrageous TV deaths

"The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie," said Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater. "He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us. It's what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 74 years."

Archie's death, which was announced in April, follows a trend of famous comic-book characters—such as Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Steve Rogers (Captain America)—dying. But Goldwater thinks Archie's death is more relatable for fans.

Out and proud celebrities

"Archie is not a superhero like all the rest of the comic book characters," he said. "He's human. He's a person. When you wound him, he bleeds. He knows that. If anything, I think his death is more impactful because of that. We hope by showing how something so violent can happen to Archie, that we can—in some way—learn from him."
