Shoppers Expected to Save $83 Million During Tax Free Weekend

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) --Tax free weekend is wrapping up in central Texas, with shoppers estimated to have saved nearly $83 million off of local and state sales tax.

From August 8th to the 10th parents were able to buy most school clothes, supplies, back packs and shoes without having to pay sales tax, meaning they saved an average $8 off every $100 they purchased. "We save a little bit every year," Clayton Brooks said as he shopped for his five-year-old son. "You just wait for the weekend to come and knock it all out at once."

According to the National Retail Federation, the average family with school age children from kindergarten to 12th grade will spend $670 on back to school items. Shopping on tax free weekend could shave more than $50 off that total. That doesn't include savings most retailers tack on this weekend to bring in shoppers.

"It's definitely bigger than most weekends," Waco Target's executive team leader Sharon Chacon said. "It increases sales and traffic significantly adn that's why we have to prepare for it."

In addition to the school children, Chacon says they also see a lot of college students buying school supplies and dorm furniture. The NRF estimates college back to school spending exceeds $900 this year per student.

But it's not just back to school savings. Other items on the tax free list had parents packing aisles you wouldn't expect. "We have a toddler so we're definitely going to get some pull ups today," Gaby Garcia said. "He is also needing shoes and some flip flops, so we'll check that out too."

While shopping for other things, Garcia found out diapers and baby clothes are also tax free during the holiday, so she decided to stock up. "That will save us a lot of money. We're having to buy those often, spending at least $20 a week," she said.
