Midway ISD Arson Suspect Arrested

Posted: Updated:
On July 31, 2014 The Hewitt Police Department received a 911 call in reference to a structure fire at 10401 W. Panther Way – at the Midway ISD agricultural barn.  The Waco Fire Department responded to the location and extinguished the active fire before it spread any further.  Two storage sheds containing feed and hay were destroyed as a result of the fire.

At approximately 0730 on the 31st, MISD administrators reviewed the video footage from the agricultural barn and observed a white male, believed to be in his 20's, who had walked onto the property, interacted with some of the livestock at the location, then left quickly as the fire ignited.  The Hewitt Police Department initiated a criminal investigation into the incident with assistance from the State Fire Marshals Office.  Through the investigation it was learned that the fire that destroyed the above mentioned property was intentionally set.

The Hewitt Police Department reached out to the public through social media, television, and print media to help identify the suspect seen in the video.  On August 12, 2014 The Hewitt Police Department received an anonymous tip as to the identity and location of a possible suspect.  Hewitt Detectives located the suspect and determined that the information provided was in fact the person depicted in the surveillance video footage.  The investigation revealed that the suspect was responsible for the fire being started and the destruction of the property.  Officers identified the suspect as Trenton Andrew Ortner

On August 15, 2014 Hewitt Detectives obtained a warrant for Ortner's arrest for Arson – 2nd degree Felony.   Ortner was placed under arrest by the Temple Police Department and transported to the Bell County Jail where he will be process shortly.
