(USA Today) -- Police in South Pasadena, Calif., have arrested two students on suspicion of planning to kill three staff members and as many classmates as possible in a mass shooting at South Pasadena High School.

Sgt. Brian Solinsky said in a statement that school officials became aware of suspicious behavior by the pair last week and contacted law enforcement authorities.

Police said one of the students was arrested Monday without incident at his home, but the second, a male, allegedly tried to flee arresting officers, who forced entry into his house.

"This is a prime example of school officials recognizing suspicious behavior," Solinsky said. "It was this information that helped prevent a horrific tragedy."

Solinsky said officials had "very specific" information, including named targets.

Police Sgt. Robert Bartl said the pair planned to carry out their attack for personal reasons, the Pasadena Star-News reports..

"They may have been crossed by one of the students or teachers, maybe by how the teacher taught or a grade (one of the suspects) received," said Bartl. "It was definitely directed toward people they weren't happy with."

According to police, the two youths had allegedly been researching weapons on the Internet -- rifles, handguns, submachine guns, bombs and explosives, specifically propane -- although authorities did not find any weapons in their homes.

School will open Thursday as scheduled, according to South Pasadena Unified School District Supt. Geoff Yantzs, the Los Angeles Times reports.
