Soldiers and Families Win School Supplies, Mingle with Others Facing Challenges

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) Soldiers on post are getting ready for back to school, and Friday some had a chance to win school supplies.

It was a get-together for the Warrior Transition Unit, a unit for wounded, ill, and injured soldiers.

Friday their families came out to play games, have some lunch, and get a shot at winning backpacks stuffed with school supplies.

But more than that, it was a way for families to mingle and talk about their shared struggles in the unit.

"It really allows you the time to see what everyone else is going through compared to what you're going through," said E-4 Spc. Alexis Addison. "So, you know you, can use that and cross reference in your life."

"For a long time, especially in the early stages, you feel like there's something wrong with your family, " added Annslee Rasmussen, the wife of a soldier. "When in reality, many soldiers and families are facing the same difficulties."

The day started off more slowly than organizers had hoped, but a good crowd turned out by mid-afternoon.
