Police Find Suicidal Subject, Killeen Elementary School Placed on Lockdown

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- A Killeen elementary school was placed on lockdown Thursday after police found a suicidal subject near the school.

Just after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Killeen police found a man armed and locked in his car in the 2200 block of Mikulec.

Officials said the suicidal subject was in a black car not far from Saegart Elementary.

After notification from police, Saegart was placed on an external lockdown.

Police were in a standoff with the man for several hours. Spike strips were even laid down in front of the car, so he could not take off.

Part of W.S. Young Drive was closed during the standoff.

After several hours, police were able to detain the man.

The 39-year-old man was arrested and taken for medical evaluation.

Officials say that no charges are likely.

School officials lifted the lockdown and classes were told to resume as scheduled.

Messages were sent out to parents throughout the standoff. Here were the messages that went out from Mrs. Charles-Walters at Saegert Elementary:

Hello Saegert Parents, An incident has occurred near our school which has required the implementation of our emergency response plan. At this time our campus is in External Lockdown. All Students and Staff are safe in the building. Additional information regarding this incident will be forthcoming. Mrs. Charles-Walters

UPDATE to parents at 9:45 a.m.:

Hello Saegert Parents, We wanted to keep you updated on the neighborhood situation. All buses have arrived. Students are in classes, safe and learning. The school will remain on external lock down and students will remain inside the building. We will provide a follow-up when we receive the all clear. Mrs. Charles-Walters
