WEBSTER, TEXAS - A young woman has been charged with intoxication assault of a peace officer after a crash that seriously injured a Texas DPS Trooper early Labor Day morning.
The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the I-45 Gulf Freeway near NASA Rd 1.
Department of Public Safety officials say Trooper Chad Blackburn was stopped on the shoulder of the freeway’s main lanes when a woman in a red Mercedes struck his patrol car from behind. The patrol car was crushed, and the Mercedes rolled.
“He is a veteran. He conducts himself in a professional manner. He abided by the Texas traffic standard and was legally parked at the side of the road," said DPS Trooper Richard Stanifer. "A great guy from a personal standpoint."
Blackburn is at Memorial Hermann Hospital where his wife and two children are at his side. A steady stream of law enforcement officers have also visited him.
Tuwanna Moore, 31, was taken to the hospital to be checked out and blood tests determined she was drunk, according to the DPS. Investigators say Moore was also speeding and witnesses said she was weaving and driving erratically. She has been moved to the Harris County Jail.
Ironically, Trooper Blackburn was patrolling for drunk drivers when he was hit.
“We are actively out here in the middle of the night to get these drunk drivers off of the road and when we fail to do that we become victims or we become the ones trying to clean it up and clear it," said Stanifer.
Trooper Blackburn works out of the Webster office and has been with the DPS for 10 years.
The investigation and cleanup lasted for nearly six hours. The freeway reopened just before 8 a.m.
