'Best experience ever' | Harker Heights boy celebrates 11th birthday even though his party was canceled

"At first I was thinking maybe the coronavirus isn’t a big deal, but now everything is shut down and we can't go anywhere," Kendall Harris said.

HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — A boy in Harker Heights describes his birthday party this year as, "The best experience ever!"

Kendall Harris just knew his plan to have a birthday party was over, due to the coronavirus.

"At first I was thinking maybe the coronavirus isn’t a big deal, but now everything is shut down and we can't go anywhere," Harris said.

Not if his parents could help it.

"It was really surprising to see all my friends, family and the teachers from my other grades," Harris said.

The 11-year-old was supposed to be on a party bus. But for him, a birthday parade on Sunday meant so much more.

"It was really special to me to have all those people come see me for one special day of the year," Harris said.

His mom, Brittany Harris, was adamant about not letting the coronavirus keep their family from making memories.

"This year with us being on a shelter in place order I wasn’t going to be able to throw one of our big birthday parties,” Brittany Harris said. “And, I’m like 'Okay, I’m not okay with not doing anything at all.'"

She thanked friends, family and coworkers for being there.

"We are blessed and fortunate that so many people were able to show our son love during a time when he thought he wasn’t going to be able to celebrate his birthday,” Harris said.

It’s a birthday Kendall Harris will never forget.
