H-E-B extends its 'Texas Proud' pay increases until May 24 amid coronavirus pandemic

H-E-B first offered the additional pay effective March 16 through April 12, before extending it.

AUSTIN, Texas — H-E-B has extended its $2-an-hour pay increase for employees until at least May 24, the Texas supermarket chain announced on Thursday.

The “Texas Proud Pay” for hourly store, manufacturing, warehouse and transportation workers was implemented last month as employees worked to keep stores stocked during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Thank you, Partners, for everything you do!” H-E-B said on Twitter on Thursday.

H-E-B first offered the additional pay effective March 16 through April 12, before extending it through May 10, and now again until May 24.

The grocery chain said the stipend is its way of recognizing employees’ “hard work and thank them for their commitment as they help serve our customers & communities.”

“Texans rely on H-E-B and we rely on our great Partners,” H-E-B said in a statement. “We understand it is our responsibility to provide essential services to our customers during a time when so many other businesses have not been able to stay open or have had to scale back operations significantly. H-E-B Partners come together during times of crisis to take care of each other and our customers. This is the spirit of H-E-B.”

As concerns have grown over the COVID-19 pandemic, H-E-B and other grocery chains have opened hiring of temporary employees to meet the demand of shoppers.
