Funeral for Alexis Crawford, slain Clark Atlanta student, moved to larger location

The news comes as police announce that two people have been arrested and charged in her death.

ATHENS, Ga. — After the vast outpouring of support for a missing Clark Atlanta University student found dead, family announced they have had to seek a bigger venue for their daughter's funeral.

A spokesperson for the family of Alexis Crawford said the new location will help "accommodate the public interest in the funeral." In addition, they have also added a public viewing to take place the day before the funeral service.

"The sympathy, love and concern that is pouring in from across the country for Alexis Crawford and her family is incredible," said Rev. Markel Hutchins. "As horrifying additional details about the facts and circumstances surrounding her heart-wrenching death are revealed to the public, I ask people to remember Alexis’ family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."

Atlanta-based Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, Hutchins said.

"Well wishes, cards, and financial contributions to assist the family with covering the costs of having to unexpectedly bury this beautiful 21-year-old Clark Atlanta University student should be made directly to Gregory B. Levett and Sons funeral home at either of their locations," he said.

He added that the Crawford family is "truly grateful and encouraged by the outpouring of love and concern they have received" from around the U.S. and the world.

“I’ve spent most of today in Athens, Georgia consoling the family of Alexis Crawford and assisting them with the unthinkable task of planning her funeral," the Rev. Markel Hutchins wrote. "The family is simply devastated and heartbroken that their beloved 'Lexi' was so senseless murdered."

Crawford, who was reported missing on Nov. 1, was found dead in a DeKalb County park on Friday. Two people, her roommate Jordan Jones and Jones' boyfriend Barron Brantley, have been charged with malice murder in her death; though, an official motive hasn't been announced. Both have been taken into custody and are being held at the Fulton County jail.
