The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that an inmate who escaped from a van during a transfer from Garland to Dallas on Monday has been captured.

Justin Gonzalez, 25, was handcuffed to another inmate inside a sheriff’s office van but managed to free himself and open the van’s rear doors, according to DSO spokesman Raul Reyna. Gonzalez took off running toward an industrial area near Forest Lane and Shiloh Road in Garland.

At about 11 p.m. Wednesday, he was found and arrested on charges of escaping while arrested and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. His bond is set at $100,000 total.

He was caught when investigators found a car he was using at an apartment complex near Audelia Road and Walnut Street in Dallas.

Gonzalez was originally arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Garland, Reyna said. He had been arrested last Friday on a theft charge but bonded out that day.

His criminal past also includes arrests for unlawful carry of a weapon and "several" drug-related charges, Reyna said.
