Local teen says stranger pulled gun on him during walk home from school

"I turned around because he kept getting closer to me, and he said if I ever see you again I'm gonna kill you."

Harker Heights — A Harker Heights teen is warning the community Monday night after he said a stranger pulled a gun on him and threatened to kill him. Kani Wesley, 17, ended the school day at Pathways Academic Campus on April 13 and loaded the school bus to go home.

Wesley said the bus dropped him and another girl off near Bob White Lane and they began walking the rest of the way to their separate homes. A short time later, Wesley said a car pulled up, and the suspect who was on the passenger side told Wesley he should start running before he gets hit. Wesley said he ignored the man and kept walking, and that's when the teen said the man exited the vehicle and things escalated.

"I turned around because he kept getting closer to me, and he said if I ever see you again I'm gonna kill you," Wesley said.

Welsey believes the suspect is the female student's ex-boyfriend and thinks the man thought Wesley and the girl were dating, which Wesley says is not true. After the incident, Wesley rushed home and told his mom, who called the police.

Harker Heights police have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect identified as Shondivo Santos. Santos was originally facing a charge of aggravated assault for this incident, but that was changed to disorderly conduct, something Wesley's mom Mercedes Wesley is not happy about.

"For someone to pull a gun on someone they don't know, threaten their life and to be charged with disorderly conduct just doesn't seem appropriate at all. We have enough gun violence in the area and that doesn't seem like the appropriate approach to take," Wesley's mother Mercedes said.

Police said that charge change is because the information provided in the initial report led them to believe the victim was not in fear of "imminent bodily injury."

Wesley said he is not staying at home right now out of fear of running into Santos againn but felt it necessary to warn the community.

"He was already threatening my life. He might be angry one day and see somebody else and have the gun on him and decide to start shooting. I want to get this guy off of the streets," Wesley said.

Wesley says he plans to return home after the school year ends.
