Man released on parole for 2008 Killeen robbery, back in jail on drug charge

George Powell was out on bond and set for a new trial on a 2008 robbery charge. Now he's back in jail after police said he had meth on him during a traffic stop.

BELL COUNTY, Texas — George Powell, the man out on bond after he was granted a new trial for a 2008 Killeen robbery, was sent back to jail after police arrested him on drug charges.

Lt. Jim Barnes with the Huntsville Police Department said Powell was pulled over on Feb 6 for failure to use a turn signal.

During his conversation with the patrol officer, Barnes said Powell was acting and talking in a nervous manner.

The officer asked Powell was asked to step out of the car and he consented to a pat-down.

During the pat-down, the officer found a small bag of methamphetamine in his pocket, Barnes said.

Powell was arrested and taken to the police station. He was charged with possession under a gram.

Barnes said police then found Powell had taken a second bag of meth out of another pocket and tried to crush it, which resulted in a tampering with evidence charge.

Powell was also arrested March 28 on a DWI charge.

Powell's bond was revoked and he was booked into the Bell County jail on Monday.

Powell was released on bond Sept. 25, 2019. He had been in the Gatesville prison for a 2008 robbery at a Killeen 7-11 but always maintained his innocence.

His conviction was vacated due to prosecutorial misconduct.
