Raymond Grely Thornton, 59, was convicted Wednesday and sentenced Thursday to life in prison after being accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old family member in January 2016.

According to Thornton's arrest affidavit, he called the girl into his room pinned her on the bed, removed her gym shorts and underwear and sexually assaulted her. The victim told investigators Thornton told her to be quiet while she tried to push him off her.

Thornton was tried by Assistant District Attorneys Gabrielle Massey and Hilary LaBorde in McLennan County's 54th District Court, where he was sentenced to life behind bars and a $10,000 fine on both of two counts of sexual assault of a child.

“This jury’s swift justice for this now five time convicted felon affirms how seriously our community takes sexually violent crimes, especially those against underage children," Massey said in an email. "The brave survivor of this horrific crime can now put this chapter of her life behind her knowing that her perpetrator will never hurt another woman or child.”
