City of Waco approves Cameron Park Zoo to reopen May 29

The Cameron Park Zoo is scheduled to reopen May 29. This was just approved by The City of Waco.

WACO, Texas — The Cameron Park Zoo is scheduled to reopen May 29. This was just approved by The City of Waco.

The city announced the zoo would close on March 14 in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. At the time, the city said the zoo would remain closed until at least midnight on May 29.

Marketing Manager Duane McGregor said Monday when they do open, staff will wear masks and guests will be encouraged to wear them but they will not be required. Masks will be available to purchase.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday Texas was moving into phase two of his plan to reopen the state.

The governor's order stated zoos could operate at "25% of the normal operating limits as determined by the zoo owner."

Any exhibits that are interactive, child play areas and video game areas must remain closed, according to the order. Indoor areas, other than restrooms, must also remain closed.

McGregor said the Asian forest where the tigers and orangutan live will be closed to protect the safety of the animals.

The order also states public zoos, like Cameron Park, must still have permission from the local government to open.
