In remission and on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus

Michele Tomastik is in remission after being diagnosed with cancer last year. She is now battling a virus impacting thousands of Texans.

TEXAS, USA — Michele Tomastik said she was diagnosed with a somewhat rare form of cancer in September.

"I was diagnosed with urethral cell stage 3 high-grade cancer. I subsequently had my left kidney and ureter removed," Michele said.

In December, she finished her chemo and got to ring the bell. She is in remission and now on the frontlines battling the coronavirus in Central Texas.

"I'm still immunocompromised somewhat, but I just really felt like I needed to be there. I needed to step in. I needed to ease people's fears," Michele said.

Michele said a nurse is who she is, it is ingrained in her and she cannot imagine doing anything else.

"For my family, it is a little scary," Michele said. "I was so blessed when I was going through my cancer and my chemo treatments by so many different people. People I didn't even know. I just felt like I needed to give that back."

Michele plans to keep nursing until she is told she cannot continue or she gets sick.

"I will do this until they drag me out of here," Michele laughed.

She mentioned there is no need to panic as long as you are being cognizant of what you are doing. Michele asked for people to stay home and do not go into the emergency room unless it is an emergency.

"One foot in front of the other. We are going to get through this," Michele said.
