4 tips to stay safe when using space heaters

The Waco Fire Department has some safety tips for when using your space heaters this winter.

WACO, Texas — During cold winter months people might start to use space heaters as well as other ways to stay warm, but if not used properly this can start a fire in your home.

In 2017 there were 205 structure fires in Waco, according to Lieutenant Keith Guillory. From November to January of 2018 there were a total of 113.

So far in 2018, there have been 266 structure fires. According to Guillory, the number is so high because January and February were very cold months.

"This is the time that our fires do go up because people are heating their homes in unconventional ways. They're using space heaters, people are using their stoves, they're using their ovens and things of that nature," Guillory said.

As temperatures drop, the Waco Fire Department wants homeowners to be aware of some things that can help you prevent fires this winter.

1. Give your space heater space

If you do use a space heater, the fire department recommends having a perimeter of three feet around it.

2. Keep away from flamable material

Be sure to keep it away from anything flammable, such as curtains, blankets, stuffed animals, and keep your pets away as well.

3. Don't use an extension cord

One of the most important things to be aware of, according to Guillory is that you should never plug in your space heater to an extension cord. Always make sure that it is directly plugged into an outlet.

4. In case of fire, have an escape plan

In case of an emergency, Guillory said many people don't know what to do. So you should have an emergency escape plan in place. The National Fire Protection Association has a guide to help you create one.

First, draw a map of your home. Visit each room and find two ways out. Pick a meeting place, and lastly practice your escape plan.

Home fire escape plan:

The Waco Fire Department suggests that you have working smoke alarms in every room of your home on every level. This could possibly save you your family's lives.

If you do not have working smoke alarms you can contact your local Fire Marshal.
