WACO, Texas — A 34-year-old is charged with attempted murder after he assaulted, then shot someone who was running away after they tried to break into his vehicle Tuesday morning, the Waco Police Department said.

Officers were first called to the area of North 25th Street and Colonial Avenue in Waco at about 10:30 a.m. about an assault in progress. While on the way, the call was changed to shots fired.

Police said a 28-year-old man and a woman were trying to break into 34-year-old Courtney Russell's vehicle. According to police, Russell and another man saw them and began to beat the two people up. Russell went to his house in the 2500 block of Colonial Ave. to grab his gun, police said.

Russell came back out to confront the would-be burglars and the man ran away, according to police. Russell shot him multiple times in the leg. The shooting victim was taken to a hospital. He is expected to be OK, police said.

Police found Russell shortly after the shooting and took him to the McLennan County Jail. He is charged with attempted murder.
